Filters & Reservoirs

Most hydraulic failures start with solid particles in the oil. Because the oil film between pump, valve spool and cylinder surfaces is only microns thick, dust entering the system turns straight into wear; filtration and reservoir design are therefore the quiet components that decide how long a circuit lasts. A reservoir is more than a tank: it buys time for entrained air to separate, for sediment to settle and for part of the heat to be rejected. For those functions to work, suction and return lines must be separated, the return must end below oil level and reservoir volume must be matched to circuit flow. This group currently lists an oil filler and breather filter (AB-1162). A filler-breather filters the ambient air drawn in as the oil level changes while cylinders work, and stops dirt from entering the reservoir directly during top-up. It is the cheapest protective element in a circuit and the most frequently neglected one, and among the first things to check when a system will not hold its cleanliness target.
