What is IP?
IP (Ingress Protection) is the two-digit protection classification defined in IEC 60529. The first digit covers solid objects (dust), the second covers water / liquids. For pneumatic valves, the IP rating describes the environment the valve will work in with a single code.
The Most Common Classes
IP54 — Standard Industry
- Dust: limited protection against dust (does not affect device operation)
- Water: protected against splashing from any direction
- Application: dry production lines, robot cells, assembly stations
IP65 — Washdown Line
- Dust: completely dust tight
- Water: protected against low-pressure water jets (12.5 L/min, 6.3 mm nozzle, 3 m distance)
- Application: food lines (washdown included), outdoor panels, dusty machine surroundings
IP67 — Temporary Immersion
- Water: protected against immersion at 1 m depth for 30 minutes
- Application: agricultural machinery, outdoor automation, waterside steel structures
IP69K — High-Pressure Washdown
- The standard of the automotive and food sectors; withstands 80°C water, 100 bar pressure and close-range washing from 10–30 cm
- Application: food processing plants (CIP/SIP), heavy vehicle washing, meat processing
3 Common Mistakes in Selection

Assuming that IP67 = IP65 + IP69K. Wrong — IP69K is a separate test, and a valve certified to IP67 is not automatically IP69K. If high-pressure washing is involved, look for dual certification (IP67 + IP69K).

Setting the IP requirement too low because the environment and the equipment mounted on it are not assessed together. Even if the valve is IP67, if the connector is IP54 then the protection of the system is IP54.

Assuming that ATEX = IP65. ATEX is the explosive atmospheres directive; it is independent of IP. A valve may be approved for ATEX zone 2 and still be IP54.
